Macromaille: Spiral 6-in-1

Description

The spiral reminds me that my cash is being sucked down the proverbial drain by my macromailling ways...

This is the single most expensive thing I have ever made from chainmaille, which is pitiful because there are only twelve rings in it...and they're aluminum.

The rings, however, are some of the largest I have seen used at 2.45" Inner diameter and made from 3/8" thick aluminum rod (Which most people would use for winding normal sized wire on to make their rings. I wound this on a 2" diameter chunk of steel pipe and the springback accounted for the much larger ID. The rings were closed with the combination of a hammer, a vice, and a 12" long hefty screwdriver (used like a crowbar). I gave it a quick etch in lye to try to hide the dents, dings, and scrapes caused by the unconventional closing methods.

I would really love to do some sort of outdoor sculpture piece that is built like this (but welded together obviously) and much, much larger.

The comparison piece is an earlier macromaille attempt. [link]

what on earth did you use to cut these rings? can you imagine how crap pinch-cuts would look?
